Perspectives on Premarital Sex of Cambodian Adolescents: A Qualitative Research
Yang Young-Ran
Abstract
Purpose: Social perceptions and thoughts about sex have evolved over time. The significant use of the internet plays a crucial role in shaping the sexual perspectives of adolescents. This study aimed to explore Cambodian adolescents¡¯ perceptions of premarital sex.

Methods: A total of 48 male and 43 female students were recruited from three high schools. The data were collected through individual interviews, and analyzed using thematic qualitative analysis methods.

Results: The results of the data analysis revealed several distinct themes, encompassing various aspects of their prohibitive beliefs, anticipated sexual fantasies, judgmental behaviors, and challenging traditional norms: rethinking premarital sex perceptions as an old-fashioned phenomenon.

Conclusion: The perspectives on premarital sex are not significantly different between older and modern young people. These findings provide valuable support for fostering public discourse and the creation of sex education programs. It is essential for future health education initiatives targeting adolescents to incorporate healthy perspectives on premarital sex during adolescence, along with the promotion of protective measures against HIV.
